Chocolate As An Aphrodisiac
Aphrodisiac Recipes for Chocolate Lovers
Chocolate as an aphrodisiac will be found on every list of foods that are believed to incite passion. Almost any list of aphrodisiac recipes will begin with recipes for chocolate lovers.
Historically, Aztecs may have been the first to believe that consuming the cocoa bean would enhance sexual desire. Montezuma, the Aztec emperor, was said to depend on the cocoa bean to energize his romantic liasons.
Chocolate is also thought to be a more effective aphrodisiac for women and that other aphrodisiacs for men are better romance stimulators. Sadly, for those of us who are addicted to chocolate, there is little scientific research that shows a direct link between chocolate consumption and heightened sexual arousal.
Chocolate - A Healthy Passion is a wonderful resource for chocolate recipes.
Chocolate Covered Strawberries:
Ingredients
Strawberries: choose large berries that are not too ripe
Chocolate: we prefer high quality dark chocolate however you can use whatever you like including a package of chocolate chips.
Directions
Rinse the strawberries and pat them dry with paper towels. (Unless the strawberries are completely dry, any water that mixes with the chocolate will spoil the process.
Place the chocolate into a microwave-safe bowl and put into the microwave on the highest setting for about 30 seconds. Repeat, a few seconds at a time, stirring each time, until chocolate is melted and creamy.
While the chocolate is being melted, cover a cookie sheet with a layer of waxed paper.
Take the strawberries, one at a time, by the stem end and dip into the chocolate. Turn the strawberries so all sides are evenly covered with the chocolate mixture. Allow any excess chocolate to drip back into the mixing bowl.
Place each chocolate dipped strawberry onto the wax paper lined cookie sheet. After all of the strawberries have been dipped, allow the chocolate to set for an hour.
Share them with your lover!
The really good news is that amorous attraction is more often visual than internal...though the palpitating effect on the heart is certainly an internal result. If you are offered a luscious, heart-shaped strawberry that is dripping rich, dark chocolate, you are likely to know that you being seduced...even before your tongue touches the chocolate!
From that perspective, chocolate as an aphrodisiac remains at the top of my list!
If you are interested in what is known about the chemical ingredients in chocolate that may help incite passion, here they are:
- Tryptophan: a building block of serotonin which is a brain chemical involved in sexual arousal.
- Phenylethylamine: a stimulant related to amphetamine, that is released in the brain when people fall in love.
