Rent a bike at Easy Riders to ride the trail, or rent a horse at Outback Trail rides for a guided tour of Pillsbury State Forest. Explore the Northland Arboretum; take a cruise on the Mississippi Belle, take a scuba class at the Minnesota School of Diving, play mini-golf and ride go karts at Pirate’s Cove. Detroit Lakes, Minnesota’s mile long city beach is the place to start. Enjoy the crowds at Zorbaz on the Beach or find your own private cabin or resort on one of the areas 412 lakes. The Lodge on Lake Detroit is a new and exciting resort. Or try the Acorn Bed & Breakfast 5 miles outside of town. Be sure to have dinner at either the Speak Easy or The Fireside. WeFest in August draws thousands of people to Detroit Lakes.

Grand Rapids, Minnesota’s Ruttger’s Sugar Lake Lodge is the place to stay if your romantic vacation includes playing golf. The Sawmill Inn honors the city’s lumber history and offers a pool, whirlpool and sauna in a sky-lit courtyard. Grand Rapids is the birthplace of Judy Garland and a museum showcases her achievements. The first weekend of August features the Tall Timber Days festival.

Walker, Minnesota is located on the shores of Minnesota's third largest lake...Leech Lake. Visit one of Minnesota's most unique wineries, Forestedge Winery, where wine is crafted from rhubarb, blueberries, cranberries and other northern Minnesota fruits. Enjoy the Eelpout festival in celebration of one of our ugliest fish, go out fishing on the lake at City Dock Launch Service, rent a sailboat or take lessons at Fleet Sails, explore the Shingobee Recreation area for canoeing, kayaking or skiing in winter. There are more than 50 resorts in the Walker area and many other cabins and hotels.

Romantic Getaways in Southern Minnesota

The prairies, rivers and bluffs of southern Minnesota provide settings for romantic getaways that are entirely different than the northern regions of Minnesota.

Red Wing, Minnesota is a flower-filled river town and one of the prettiest towns along the Mississippi River. Stroll throught the historic 19th century downtown, park on scenic Skyline Drive at night for a romantic view of the city, take a Red Wing Riverboat ride or a narrated tour on the Red Wing Trolley. Stillwater, Minnesota is another charming Minnesota river town...the one on the St. Croix River. You will be pampered in one of several wonderful bed & breakfast inns, stroll on the riverfront promenade as the moon comes up, or take a romantic gondola ride. Hot air ballon rides are also available at several Stillwater locations.


Taylors Falls, Minnesota is the last town along the St. Croix River. On the river beyond Taylors Falls are some of Minnesota's largest state parks. Right in Taylors Falls you will find one of our smallest, and most interesting state parks...Interstate State Park. Take a scenic boat tour on the river, visit Wild Mountain for water rides and the alpine slide and canoe and kayak rentals. You will find several lovely bed & breakfast inns here and several hotels as well.

Lanesboro, Minnesota is often called the "bed & breakfast capitol" of Minnesota. Lanesboro is so popular as a romantic vacation destination that you would do well to book well in advance of your romantic getaway. All of downtown Lanesboro is listed in the National Register of Historic places and is also in one of the most beautiful settings in Minnesota. Harmony, Minnesota is a friendly small town located in the heart of Minnesota's largest Amish community. Experience the romance of earlier times on a tour of the Amish farms, shops and roadside stands. Harmoney is also the location of Niagara Cave that features a 60 foot underground waterfall.

Lake City, Minnesota is built along the shores of Lake Pepin. Cruise Lake Pepin on the replica paddlewheeler, Pearl of the Lake. Visit the Great River Vineyard and area apple orchards. The Red Gables Inn is one of Lake City's best bed & breakfast inns.
