is a romantic travel destination that can lure you to spend days exploring. Stay in a lakefront hotel, walk the lakewalk,watch the ships come into the harbor. Visit the rose garden, play at the casino, visit museums, the aquarium and Glensheen Mansion.
Once you decide that you can pull yourself away from Duluth, get on Highway 61 toward Two Harbors. You can just stay on 61 and get to Two Harbors however a better idea is to take the exit right after Kitchi-Gammi park and drive the North Shore Scenic Drive along the Lake Superior shoreline.
Keep your eyes open for the "touristy" stops that appeal to you as a couple. You could make a stop at the French River Hatchery, Tom's Logging Camp, or Stoney Point. In the little town of Knife River, you can pick up some smoked salmon at Russ Kendall's Smokehouse.

- Silver Bay is the youngest town on the North Shore. It was built by Reserve Mining Company to house the workers for the taconite plant.
- Palisade Head is, without a doubt, one of Minnesota's most scenic spots. Take the road at mile marker 57 to the overlook where you can...carefully...walk along the rim and view the beauty.
- Other state parks include Tettegouche, George H. Crosby Manitou and Temperence River.
The tiny town of Tofte has more to offer than first meets the eye. Tofte is a link to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness via County Road 2. A notable tourist attraction in Tofte is the North Shore Commercial Fishing Museum. If you decide to stay in Tofte for a night, one great place is the Cliff Dweller Hotel on Lake Superior.
If you are looking for information about the Superior National Forest, make a stop at the U.S. Forest Service Ranger Station in Tofte. A couple of places to find a great meal in Tofte are the Breakers Bar & Grill and Coho Cafe and Bakery.

The rich history of the North Shore is deeply rooted in its plentiful natural resources. On the northern end of the Byway, visit Grand Portage National Monument, which features a reconstructed North-West Company fur-trading post. Stop in Grand Marais, a quaint harbor town that is the entrance to the Gunflint Trail, a paved trail leading inland to the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness. At the southern end of the Byway, watch giant ore boats pull up to the docks at Two Harbors. Also visit a much smaller boat, the 100 year-old tugboat, The Edna G., which is displayed here. Learn the story of this area in small museums in Two Harbors and Tofte, as well as interpretive programs at the state parks.
- Outdoor Photography: Taking some great outdoor pictures along the North Shore is something that comes rather easily. With the waterfront and its activity, or waking one of the many trails, you're almost assured an opportunity to get that shot you've been looking for. The area also has many historical structures that will catch your eye.
- The shores of Lake Superior display many different types of rocks that collectors are looking for. There are agates, crystal, cobblestone, and amethyst to name a few plus driftwood can be found throughout the shorelines. There are even local shops that specialize in agates.
- If berry picking is something you enjoy, the area has an abundance of blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and choke cherries. Getting the secret spots from the locals could be your biggest challenge.
