Valentine's Day Facts

Valentine's Day facts about the origin of Valentine's Day and some just for fun Valentine's Day facts. There are a number of interesting facts about Valentine's Day surrounding the day attributed to Saint Valentine. Commonly shortened to just Valentine's Day, it is celebrated every year on February 14th.

Valentine's Day Facts It is usually a day where couples in romantic relationships share their love for one another by sending flowers, chocolates and going out on dates. The exact origin of Valentine's Day and the importance of Saint Valentine to the celebration are not known, but historians do know that the day has both Christian and Roman roots. According to the Catholic Church, there are at least three known saints that share the name Valentine, all three of which were martyred.

The way we now celebrate this holiday has little or nothing to do with these origins. Instead we look for ways to share our love with Valentine’s Day creative ideas.

The Legends of Valentine

A popular story about the origins of Valentines Day, states that Valentine was a third century Roman priest when Claudius II was Emperor. Due to the Emperor's belief that single men were better soldiers, he barred young men from marrying. Valentine secretly performed marriages and was put to death when this was discovered. According to another legend, Valentine may have been killed for helping Christians escape from Roman prisons. Another legend posits that Valentine was in a prison and was in love with the jailor's daughter. In this legend, he wrote her a love letter, which he signed "From your Valentine," effectively sending the very first valentine. You might even say it was one of the first homemade romantic gifts.

Pagan Roots?

Some historians claim that the date of Valentine's Day corresponds with the anniversary of either Saint Valentine's death or his burial. This was most likely around the year 270 A.D. Other historians believe that Valentine's Day was put in the middle of February to coincide with the Pagan festival of Lupercalia, which began on February 15. This may have been the church's attempt to "Christianize" the festival. We've certainly become much more creative about Valentine’s Day activities.
