Notable Historical Valentine's Day Facts
During the Middle Ages, it is said that Charles of Valois of France, the Duke of Orléans, sent poems and tokens of affection to his wife Bonne d'Armagnac after he was captured by the English.
Single people during the Middle ages would place their name on a heart shaped piece of parchment into a large bowl. Each person drew a name from the bowl and pinned it to their sleeve for a week. During that week that person was the other persons Valentine. It is also where the saying, “wearing your heart on your sleeve,” originated.
During the Middle ages many people signed their name with an X. The mark was kissed to express their sincerity. The X has become a symbol of a kiss on many Valentine's Day cards.
Chocolate
Our favorite Valentines Day fun facts are about chocolate!
- It is said that the world’s greatest lover, Casanova, ate chocolate to maintain his virility.
- Richard Cadbury realized how easy it would be to market special Valentine's Day chocolates since physicians were advising patients to eat it after losing a loved one. In 1868 Cadbury produced the first box of Valentine's Day chocolates. One of the many Valentine themed chocolates now available include these Cadbury Chocolate Roses.
- During this holiday over 35 million heart shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold, generating more than one billion dollars in US sales alone. Since Valentine's Day is celebrated in Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, Mexico and the United Kingdom it is possible that tens of billions of heart shaped boxes of chocolate are purchased.

- Until 1913 when Hallmark started producing Valentine's Day cards all Valentine cards were handcrafted.
- While the total amount of Valentine's Day cards delivered can only be estimated since many are hand delivered, over 190 million are sent using the US Postal Service every year.
